The band has played plenty of shows over the years- sporadic enough to make each one a special occasion, but just often enough to keep ya wanting more. What we want to know is... which were your favorites? I'll list the shows here from the past 5 years, excluding private parties etc. I'll give a big hug to anyone who has made it to more than 10 (that's another fun survey- how many MGM shows have you been to?).

Whew! That was NOT an easy list to compile! So you guys better answer this post! Can you believe I only missed one of those shows?
Ok, so here's my top 5-
1) 6/23/05. The CD Release party was a definite success. MGM put on an amazing show, the crowd was spectacular in numbers and energy. The guests of Sean Rowe and Badi added a lot to an already incredible performance.
2) 12/31/02- MGM's big introduction to the extremely welcoming and energetic Saratoga crowd. We really had no idea what to expect going in there. I believe in the end, we sold more SWAP CDs than all other shows combined. We love Saratoga.
3) 5/19/01- This show has a lot of special meaning to me. It was the first concert I booked on my own, and it was to celebrate the opening of my new-website-at-the-time, BUMlocal. My idea was to bring my favorite two local acts together for a show... the radically different ska-punkers Monkey Gone Mad and folk songstress Paddy Kilrain. To make the night more special, I suggested that MGM back paddy up for a few songs (still undecided whether or not to call it Paddy Gone Mad or Monkey Gone Paddy)... and it worked out amazingly. I can still remember Jay's bass solo when paddy played "Rebel Yell". And the bonds between the two acts have since stayed tight as "Listen" was recorded in Paddy's basement, with her guesting on "Thank You" and members of MGM cameoing on her new album. I love it when things work out.
4) 8/11/04- Another defining show, which marked the real start of the Van Dyck's acceptance of real rock acts into their Jazz lounge as a part of the new DIY series. Which went great while it lasted. The sound system there is one of the best you'll find in the local scene and the acoustics and great AC on a hot summer evening, made skanking it up even more enjoyable.
5) 5/9/04- Tulipfest, the first time MGM really brought hip-hop to the forefront of their act, as Badi guested on a few songs, it was one of the very first times "Thank You" was performed, what was the coolest though, was people just passing by and getting hooked, and watching the crowd grow larger and larger throughout the set.
--
6) 7/5/03- Ok Ok, I couldn't narrow it down to just 5. It's the Freedom Park show! Us Scotian's grew up going to the Freedom Park stage for concerts and plays, etc... it just felt somewhat magical for MGM to be on that stage. The turnout was a little thin due to it being a holiday weekend and all, but it was a blast nonetheless. And to this day, when searching for "Monkey Gone Mad" online, pictures of that show are one of the first results.
Wow that was a long post... your turn!

I wasn't at the CD release party, but I think the 02 show with Random Fit at First Night was amazing. There was just so much energy there.. plus I got my CD signed by everyone. I think my next favorite show was at the Van Dyke when MGM was playing alone. It was a great intimate kinda setting, and I loved it.
That is all. |

I've been to WAY more than 10, I expect hugs! Big big big hugs! As far as favorite shows go... I have no real order, I'll just list off some which are very dear to my heart...
1/3/04 at the New Age... That's when I won the date with Brendan, remember? I was really hoping for a 14 year old boy to win, but alas, I was the... "winner"?
5/2/04 at Valentines... Sorry, but MGM opening for the Slackers was one of the coolest things ever! That show was magical and then some.
5/9/04 at TulipFest... Thank You was soo good that day and the energy was bangin. It was just a great afternoon of fun and frolic. And it was cool to see the crowd grow through the set, it was really exciting.
6/23/05 at Northern Lights... This show was just amazing. I've never seen anything like it and I doubt I ever will again. The music was right on, the crowd was totally into it, everything fit together. Sean Rowe and Badi were also awesome. And Michael Campion spinnin the tunes was good times too.
Shout outs to the 6/24 show in Rochester because me and Jeff's birthday began in the middle of the set and the 3/24 show at the VanDyck because of the presentation of the #2 shirts. |

Here goes my list:
1.) Listen... CD Release (6/23/2005): Absolutely amazing to play and be part of. Everyone there was so fantastic and supportive; the energy was ridiculous. Add Sean Rowe and Badi, and it's just insane how much fun happened onstage. Between Brendog, #2 and me assaulting the crowd w/wireless's, Jeff trying to play his Nord slung across his lap standing up :?, and Michael Campion playing the best music that could ever come out of a house PA, this is unquestionably my fave show.
2.) Scotia Block Party, Summer 1998 (I think?): Old-school, suckas! This is such a special show because it was the first time that I played with MGM. The drummer couldn't make it, so I sat on the throne and tried to keep up with Goldfinger and Op Ivy songs. It was the first time "Hey" was played with the band, from what I know, and that song was great that day! So necessary.
3.) Tulipfest w/Badi, 5/9/2005: You know, while we were learning this new song that Ian was working on, I wasn't really feeling it at all. I mean, it was a fun song and all, but I didn't get it. Well, when we played "Thank You" at Tulipfest, from the very first time the drums kick in, I got it right then and there onstage: this is magic. The song just took over, and the energy was beautiful. The fact that the sign read "Monkey Gone Bad" under a not-so-subtle crossout inspired more than a dozen jokes.
4.) Valentine's. w/ Perfect Thyroid (PT's last show. SWAP release), 1/26/02: This was emotional, as I think we were all sad that Perfect Thyroid would probably play Albany for the last time and that they've been such an inspirational band of musicians and people. From what I remember, we played a decent set, but being able to have us all go crazy in audience for PT's set; just the best dance party one could hope for (Ryan Seacrest, you could learn a thing or two, buddy).
5.) Chris Rowe's (spelling?) birthday party, sometime in the summer of 2001: This was when Jay was out for the summer in Chicago, and I was brought in to sub on bass for shows. I heard the songs and basslines and was really sad: how can I play these basslines? I felt like I should've told them to find a proper substitute, cuz me playing Jay's lines is like Carrot Top starring in Hamlet. Nevertheless, I listened to those songs countless times practicing, trying my darnedest not to stink, and went into the show hoping for the best. Granted it was a really spontaneous show with all sorts of things that would probably never happen again (Ian doing the organ intro to "Empty") and granted the basement was no Northern Lights, but it was a whole lot of fun, and I got the inkling that I wanted to be part of this band somehow.
Wow, a whole lot of rambling for my first post on the boards here, but really, so many of the shows are so memorable, and I feel happy every time I think of them. Can't wait for the next show already! |

Hmmm,
i really have a hard time putting an order on these, but i will list some of the memories that are jumping at me...
1. listen... cd release party (6/23/05), see arya's explaination above. i dont think there was enough water in the place to replace all i had lost through sweat. i'm sure most of the band and a lot of the crowd was in the same situation.
2. rpi (2/21/01) - this is memorable for me for several reasons. 1. it was my first show with mgm. that alone is memorable enough for me. 2. there was a terrible snow storm that night. for some reason the show wasn't called off and jay had driven to ithaca to pick up ian and heath. they were stuck in the storm on the way back and i believe had spun out a few times. we were all superworried. we had received a call that they were closeby, but we had to take the stage, so we played the songs that brendogg sings and i tried my best to cover the basslines on organ (...right). we had ran out of brendan's songs and decided to play jumbalaya next with #1 on lead vocals. right as we got to the first chorus ian, heath and jay dive onto the stage in one of the coolest mgm moments i can remember!!!
3. rpi (10/30/04) - dr. evil, abe lincoln, a mime, the bee (you know, as in nature... actually it was a spelling bee), clarlie chaplain, owen being some annoying guy...
4. mother earths (bumfest 1) (5/19/01) - i just remember this being a lot of fun.
5. club 797 (10/7/01) - this was cool for a couple reasons; it was the first time i met/played with arya and we opened for snoop dogg.
6. freedom park (7/5/03) - i think this was my first time meeting and playing with #2 and jesse.
7. tulipfest (5/9/04) - the first time i met and played with badi

I would have to go with the Listen... CD release party. While MGM has had some fantastic shows this one had a super crowd and so much energy and it made me very happy. I give it 8 thumbs up.
As a second choice I would go teh Halloween show. Ian as Abe Lincoln might have been the cutest thing ever. And there was a pinata. Who doesn't love a good pinata? |
